Some parenting conversations now suggest speaking to babies before changing their diapers as a way to introduce ideas about personal boundaries and respect. The intention may be thoughtful, but asking for permission from someone who cannot understand or answer creates an obvious practical problem.
Children deserve respect, patience, and a voice as they grow. They also depend on adults to make wise decisions when they cannot make those decisions themselves, so where is the line between honoring a child’s dignity and avoiding basic parental responsibility?
Scripture (ESV): James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
Reflection Questions:
- How can parents teach children about boundaries in age-appropriate ways?
- When does respecting a child’s preferences give way to doing what is necessary for their care?
